Types Of Speed limiters

Digital Speed Limiters
A Road Speed Limiter (RSL) is a device whose primary function is to control the Fuel feed to the engine, in order to limit the vehicle speed to a preset value. In Kenya, speed limiters are a mandatory requirement for all Commercial Vehicles (with tare weight exceeding 3 tons) and Passenger Service Vehicles (P.S.Vs).
The KS 2295-1:2018 standard specifies requirements for the performance and installation of devices designed to limit the maximum road speed of motor vehicles by control of engine power.

Old speed limiters introduced via the “Michuki Rules” were prone to tampering. The government in 2013 moved to introduce a new standard for digital speed limiters, and amended the standard in 2018 hence KS 2295-1:2018. The new device has various mechanisms to prevent tampering, and at the same time has data recording and online transmission capabilities, allowing law enforcement officers to retrieve speed data when required.

Autograde RSL’s are mainly of three types:

1) Fuel Type Speed Limiter (DASS-86)
DASS-86 is a fuel-based electronic road speed limiter, which limits the top speed smoothly by gradually cutting off the fuel supply to the engine, once the maximum allowed speed limit is reached. The device helps operators to improve Engine life, Fuel efficiency and reduce the overall maintenance cost. The product is ideal for Fleets, where the cost of device could be recovered within a month. DASS-86 is being sold in over 25 countries.

2) Electronic pedal interface type Speed Limiter (SAFEDRIVE)
This is an advanced Speed Limiter, which is most effective for vehicles with Electronic Engines and Accelerator pedal such as Scania, Mercedes Benz Trucks, and MAN. There is zero impact on vehicle with zero-moving parts and is Tamper-proof. This has specially designed connectors to avoid mistakes in connections.SAFEDRIVE is suitable for any vehicle with ECM’s.
Autograde Speed Limiters are certified by Emirates Authority for Standardization &Metrology (ESMA),Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), International Center for Automotive Testing (ICAT), Vehicle Certification Authority, United Kingdom (VCA), , Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Joint Accreditation System of Australia & New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) etc. Autograde is the only speed limiter manufacturer with an Emirates Quality Mark.

3) AUTOCHECK (Speed Recorder)
The AUTOCHECK is a speed recording device, which monitors the functioning of speed limiter and also records the highest speed in each minute. This can record data continuously and store the data for up to72 hours. It can be used by authorities to ensure that there is no tampering to the speed limiters. This is particularly important in the event of an accident since the speed report can be used as evidence. The Autocheck stands out from other competing products in the market as it can be installed and function independently from the speed limiter. It can keep recording even when the speed limiter malfunctions or is tampered with. The Autocheck through the inbuilt policing unit can provide Audio/Visual indication if speed exceeds the mentioned threshold. The Data in AUTOCHECK can be retrieved through SD card or wireless devices.
